A: Does this bus go to the train station?

B: No. You’ll have to get off at the bank and take the A52.

A: How long is the ride?

B: About ten minutes.

A: Is this the bus for Park Ridge?

B: No. It only goes as far as Main Street, but you can get the Number 31 there.

A: How long does it take to get there?

B: It only takes a few minutes.

A: Does this bus go to the beach?

B: No. You’re going the wrong way. You want the Number 11. It stops in front of the post office.

A: About how long does it take?

B: Only fifteen minutes.

4.

A: Is this the right bus for Pacific Boulevard?

B: No. You should have taken the Yellow Line bus. You can get one at the next stop.

A: Is it a long ride?

B: Not that long.

Here are some words to help you check your understanding of the dialogues. You should know the bold words to make your communication easier.

club car (n): first class carriage

coach (n): second class

deposit (v): to make part payment of money that is or will be owed

(n): money that is deposited

downtown (n): the main commercial area of the city

fare (n): money charged for a journey by bus, ship, taxi, etc.

get stuck (v): be unable to escape

ride (n): journey on a bus, a bicycle, etc.

round-trip ticket (n): return ticket

track (n): set of rails for trains

unlimited mileage (n): no charge per mile.

Look at the sentences (a-d) below and put the conversation in order.

a) How long does it take?

At the Information Agency

Read the conversation. Try to memorize it.

A: We’d like some information, please. We want to go to Los Angeles.

Clerk: Yes. What do you want to know?

A: Well, first of all, we want to know the fare. The air fare, of course.

C: When do you want to go?

A: We don’t really know. In July, or perhaps in June.

C: I see. Well, in May and June the fare is £235. But it’s less in March and April. It’s only £220.

A: And what about July?

C: It’s more in July.

A: More? How much is it then?

C: It’s £262.

A: Oh,.. Can you give us a brochure, please? We want to think about it.

C: Yes, of course. Here you are.

A: Thanks.

C: That’s all right.
