SOME MORE PRACTICE

Task 1. Read the text and answer the following questions:

1. Who sent Cristina Sanchez to a bullfighting school?

2. How does Cristina look like out of the ring?

3. Why doesn’t Cristina socialize?

4. How many times was Sanchez injured?

Cristina Sanchez: Living by the Sword

When Cristina Sanchez told her parents that she wanted to become a bullfighter instead of a hairdresser, they weren’t too pleased. But when she was eighteen her parents realized that she was serious and sent her to a bullfighting school in Madrid.

Since last July, Sanchez has been the most successful novice in Spain. Out of the ring, Sanchez does not look like a matador. She is casually elegant, very feminine and wears her long blond hair loose. She seems to move much more like a dancer than an athlete.

When she was fourteen, Sanchez’s father warned her that the world of bullfighting was hard enough for a man and even harder for a woman. Even though Spanish women won the legal right to fight bulls on equal terms with men in 1974, there are still matadors who refuse to fight in the same ring as her.

Sanchez lives with her family in Parla, south of Madrid. Her family is everything to her and is the main support in her life. “My sisters don’t like bullfighting, they don’t even watch it on TV, and my mother would be the happiest person in the world if I gave it up. But we get on well. Mum’s like my best friend.”

When Sanchez is not fighting she has a tough fitness routine – running, working out in the gym and practicing with her father in the afternoon. By nine she is home for supper, and by eleven she is in bed. She doesn’t drink, smoke or socialize.

“You have to give up a lot,” says Sanchez.

Sanchez spends most of the year travelling: in summer to Spanish and French bullfights and in winter to Latin America. Her mother dislikes watching Sanchez fight, but goes to the ring when she can. If not, she waits at home next to the telephone. Her husband has had to ring three times to say that their daughter has been injured, twice lightly in the leg and once seriously in the stomach. After she has been wounded, the only thing Cristina thinks about is how quickly she can

get back to the ring. She has a champion’s mentality, as well as courage and technique.

a sword – шпага

a bullfight – бой быков

a novice – новичок, начинающий

to injure – повредить, ранить

But tomorrow may rain so I’ll follow the sun.

And now the time has come

And so my love I must go,

And though I lose a friend

In the end you will know, oh.

One day you’ll find that I have gone,

But tomorrow may rain so I’ll follow the sun.

UNIT 13

Grammar:     Texts:     Dialogue: 1. The Future Continuous Tense 2. The Future Perfect Tense 3. Modal Verbs “ can, could” 1. «When the Tornado Hits» 2. «Hannah Jones Gazes into the Future of Futurology» 1. «To the Old Castle»

Text One

«When the Tornado Hits»

Vocabulary:
to wrap a blanket puppies a storm cellar to be safe to hide chicken barn
A tornado is about to strike this family’s farm. It’s moving quickly towards them, but luckily they’ve already seen it coming. The mother has wrapped the baby in a blanket; the father has called all the children. The family is rushing into the storm cellar, where they’ll be safe under the ground.

When the tornado hits, they’ll be sitting in the storm cellar. They’ll be hiding in the safest part of the cellar. The mother will still be holding the baby, but the animals will probably be running around, making noise.

Each person will be listening to the sounds of the storm. They’ll all be thinking about the farm and asking themselves questions about it:

«What will the farm look like when we come out of the storm cellar?»

«Will the house still be standing?»

«Will the barn still be standing?»

«Will all the animals be alive?»

Will it be raining very hard?»
