Our University

There are many universities in Orenburg. Every year young people from all parts of our big region come to the town to take entrance exams at its educational establishment s.

The Orenburg State Agrarian University is the oldest in our region and state-supported institution of higher learning. Located in the centre of the town, the university is composed of 7 faculties, 4 institutes and one college. The objective of our university is to provide the region with highly-qualified specialists.

The history of our university is very long.It was establish ed in 1930 and it was the only faculty at that time – the zoo-veterinary faculty. The head of the university is the Principal (Rector); the head of each faculty is the dean. The University staff consists of highly qualified lecturers, research workers and professors.

At present the university campus include s 12 teaching buildings. There are also three hostel s for students, three apartment houses for the staff and a large canteen. The students have many study rooms, laboratories, a modern sport centre, computer classes, large libraries with reading rooms, and many conference halls at their disposal. Classes are held in study rooms and laboratories, and lectures – in lecture halls. Laboratories are provide d with the most up-to-date equipment and the students carry on different works there.

All the lessons begin at 8 o’clock every morning. The break between the lectures lasts 25 minutes and the students can have a rest or go to the canteen.

The course of study lasts for about 5 years. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and is divide d into two terms (semesters) – the autumn and spring terms. The first- and second-year students study a lot of general subjects. Among them are Russian, Foreign languages – English and German, Theory of Economics, Philosophy, Mathematics, History and many others. Since the third course students begin to study specialized subjects.

At the end of each term the students take final tests and examinations. If the results of examinations are good and successfu l they get grants. Twice a year students have vacations – about two weeks in winter and two months in summer. At the end of the course of study the students take state exams and defend their diploma papers.

A very good tradition of our university is that theory is always accompanied by practical training. Students can practice at the university’s special well-equipped laboratories and in senior courses at various plants, offices, farms, courts, and enterprises. Senior students take part in scientific research work.

Every year about 1000 students graduate from the University. The graduators get qualifications of economists, ecologists, technologists, agronomists, engineers, lawyer s, programmers, veterinarians and managers.

Our students go in for sports. Running, jumping, playing tennis, football, volleyball and skiing are very popular in the university. Many students are members of amateur groups – drama, music, dances.

Many graduators of our university will become prominent scientists, research assistants and qualified specialists in the fields of different sciences.

It is interesting but difficult to study at our university, especially for the first-year students, because they don’t know how to organize their work and free time.
