Союзы, вводящие придаточные предложения условия

Придаточные предложения условия могут быть введены целым рядом союзов, а не только if.

Unless = if not; употребляется в предложениях с реальным и нереальным условиями.

We'll go swimming unless it rains.

Unless there is a strike, I'll be at work tomorrow.

Unless computer techniques had been developed, space research would have never made such great progress.

in case (на случай, если) - чаще употребляется в предложениях с реальным условием.

I'll take my umbrella in case it rains.

Союзы provided /providing that/ as/so long as чаще употребляются в условных предложениях I типа; они означают "при условии, что" (on condition).

Provided one knows the rate of emission, he can determine the range of the particles.

Союзы suppose /supposing/ imagine ( = what if, imagine if) употребляются в условных предложениях II и III типа в начале предложения.

Supposing a single drop of water were magnified to the size of the earth, each molecule contained in it would be no larger than a football.

Imagine you could fly, where would you go?

Poor rich Mr Briggs!
