Short glossary of welding terms

English term Ukrainian equivalent Description
arc дуга a physical gap between the end of the electrode and the base metal. The physical gap causes heat due to resistance of current flow and arc rays
arc welding дугове зварювання a technique in which metal is welded by heat generated by an electric arc struck between two electrodes or between one electrode and the metal workpiece
bevel скіс a surface that meets another at an angle other than a right angle
butt joint стикове з’єднання a joint between two plates, planks, bars, sections, etc., when the components are butted together and do not overlap or interlock. The joint may be strapped with jointing plates laid across it or welded
clad metal плакований метал a composite metal containing two or three layers that have been welded together. The welding may have been accomplished by roll welding, arc welding, casting, heavy chemical deposition, or heavy electroplating
combustion згоряння the process of burning something, rapid chemical combination of a substance with oxygen, involving the production of heat and light
debris уламки pieces from something that has been destroyed or pieces of rubbish or unwanted material that are spread around
defect дефект adiscontinuity or discontinuities that by nature or accumulated effect (for example, total crack length) renders a part or product unable to meet minimum applicable acceptance standards or specifications
density густина the ratio of the weight of a substance per unit volume; e.g. mass of a solid, liquid, or gas per unit volume at a specific temperature
deposition осад a process in which layers of a substance are formed inside something or on its surface over a period of time
electrode електрод a conductor through which an electric current enters or leaves an electrolyte, an electric arc, or an electronic valve or tube
electron beam welding електро-променеве зварювання a welding process producing coalescence of metals with molten slag which melts the filler metal and the surfaces of the work to be welded. The molten weld pool is shielded by the slag, which moves along the full cross section of the joint as welding progresses
explosion welding зварювання вибухом the welding of two parts forced together by a controlled explosion
flux флюс material used to prevent, dissolve, or facilitate removal of oxides and other undesirable surface substances
friction welding зварювання тертям a form of welding in which the welding heat is generated by pressure and relative movement at the interface in the area of the weld
fusion плавлення the melting together of filler metal and base metal (substrate), or of base metal only, which results in coalescence
gas welding газове зварювання a method of welding in which a combination of gases, usually oxyacetylene, is used to provide a hot flame
groove жолоб a long, narrow cut or depression, especially one made to guide motion or receive a corresponding ridge
heat sink тепловідвід device or substance for absorbing excessive or unwanted heat
heat-affected zone зона термічного впливу thesection of the base metal, generally adjacent to the weld zone, whose mechanical properties or microstructure, have been altered by the heat of welding
hot crack гаряче розтріскування a crack formed at temperatures near the completion of weld solidification
joint з’єднання the junction of members or the edges of members that are to be joined or have been joined
keyhole канавка a technique of welding in which a concentrated heat source penetrates completely through a work-piece forming a hole at the leading edge of the molten weld metal. As the heat source progresses, the molten metal fills in behind the hole to form the weld bead
laser-beam welding лазерне зварювання a process that fuses material with the heat from a concentrated coherent beam impinging upon the members to be joined
manual welding зварювання вручну a welding process where the torch or electrode holder is manipulated by hand
oxydation окислення a process in which a chemical substance changes because of the addition of oxygen
porosity пористість a hole-like discontinuity formed by gas entrapment during solidification
residual stress залишкова напруга the stress present in an object in the absence of any external load or force
resistance welding зварювання опором a welding technique in which the parts to be joined are held together under pressure and heat is produced by passing a current through the contact resistance formed between the two surfaces
slag шлак stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore
torch пальник a device used in the TIG (GTAW) process to control the position of the electrode, to transfer current to the arc, and to direct the flow of shielding gas
turbulent flow турбулентний потік flow of a fluid in which its velocity at any point varies rapidly in an irregular manner
ultrasonic welding зварювання ультразвуком the use of high-energy vibration of ultrasonic frequency to produce a weld between two components which are held in close contact
weld зварний шов join together (metal parts) by heating the surfaces to the point of melting with a blowpipe, electric arc, or other means, and uniting them by pressing, hammering, etc
weld metal зварювальний метал an electrode and base metal that was melted while welding was taking place, which forms the welding bead
welding зварювання a joining process of two materials that coalesced at their contacting (faying) surfaces by the application of pressure and/or heat
