Узгодження часів відбувається в тому випадку, якщо є складно-підрядне речення з підрядним додатковим. Вживання часу дієслова-присудка у підрядному додатковому

He said he knew two foreign languages.	Він сказав, що знає дві іноземні мови.
Nick looked through the window and saw that it was raining.	Нік подивився у вікно й побачив, що йде дощ.
The student answered that he had not done any mistake in his report.	Студент відповів, що він не зробив жодної помилки в доповіді.
Helen told me that she had been reading a book for an hour.	Олена сказала мені, що читає книгу вже годину.

(Future-in-the-Past)

Future-in-the-Past означає дію у майбутньому з точки зору минулого

Future Indefinite-in-the-Past	He wanted to know what time she would be back home. Йому хотілося дізнатися, коли вона повернеться додому.
Future Continuous-in-the-Past	I thought they would be staying in this town. Я думала, що вони будуть жити в цьому місті.
Future Perfect-in-the-Past	She said the train would have gone a long way by ten. Вона сказала, що потяг до десятої години проїде далеко.
Future Perfect Continuous-in-the-Past	She said the cars would have been going for 4 hours by ten. Вона сказала, що машини до десятої години будуть їхати вже протягом 4 годин.
