Text 42

There was a lady all skin and bone,

Sure such a lady was never known:

It happened upon a certain day,

This lady went to church to pray.

When she came to the church stile,

There she did rest a little while;

When she came to the church yard,

There the bells so loud she heard.

When she came to the church door,

She stopped to rest a little more;

When she came to the church within,

The parson prayed 'gainst pride and sin.

On looking up, on looking down,

She stopped to rest a little more;

And from his nose into his chin,

The worms crawled out, the worms crawled in.

Then she unto the parson said,

Shall I be so when I am dead?

O yes! O yes, the parson said,

You will be so when you are dead.

Here the lady screams.

Come to think of it, there is one good reason to have a jolly good scream or two, is there not?

4.2 William Blake's children

The contradiction between the joy and innocence of childhood and the darkish experience of maturity was reflected in William Blake's poetry. Blake (1757—1826) is perhaps one of the greatest English poets, and certainly one of the most original.

He is known to most people as the author of the Songs of Innocence and such poems as The Tiger. But his aim is immense and his achievement massive. He wished to build up a huge mythology of his own, which should portray symbolically the forces always at war with each other in the soul of man. In a way, Blake's poetry sometimes is even frightening; he rejects reason and law and conventional religion, and says that mankind can be fulfilled only through the senses and the imagination.

That is why the child's perception of the world – to see the World in a grain of sand – is, for Blake, the only one that is organic and holistic. The adult is unable to see the world as a whole. The child is the soul of humankind, the little boy lost in the dark woods of the world. Blake alludes to the images of children very often in his poems, though he never wrote 'for children'. Still, his poetry can be called the first example of verses written about childhood. This was already very close to professional children's literature (Text 43).
