Goal setting

.

T: Good morning, children. Glad to see you. How are you today in a rainy autumn day? As for me I'm under the weather today. And you? What about you, Pete (Ann,...)?

Ps: I'm fine, thanks. Perfectly well, thanks.

1. Warmer / Whole class

T: I'm glad to hear that, but I know when the weather is dull, gloomy and cloudy a lot of people feel depressed, under the weather. Do you know how to cheer them up?

Use a table:

Cheer up! Relax!

Pull yourself together! Things will come right!

Don't get upset. Don't gеt excited.

Better luck next time. Take it easy!

Don't let it get you down.

It's not the end of the world.

P: (possible answers) When I am in a bad mood I usually listen to the music. Cheer up! Listen to your favourite song and things will come right!

P2: Speak to your friend over the telephone and relax!

T: Thanks a lot for your advice. Can a walk to an autumn park, especially when the weather is nice and it influences your mood and improves it? Do you like autumn? What is particularly attractive in this season?

P: Autumn is a very beautiful season. As for me I like it very much. I enjoy going for a walk to the park or to the forest. I can't help admiring the beauty of the autumn nature, when the leaves rustle under my feet and I feel the apple scented air and I am in a good mood. You can find a lot of attractive things in this season, I must admit.

T: I agree with you and I want to add that many Americans like the idea of vacationing at a national park because it offers the opportunity 'to get away from it all.' This is a popular saying which means to get away from the hectic and stressful activities of everyday life. Autumn is my favourite season and now I propose learning the poem.

(Phonetic drills; learn the poem ‘’Autumn’’ \ Mind your sounds and intonation (the words of the poem are written on the blackboard and the teacher is wipping off some of the words while the students are repeating the lines).

Warm September brings the fruit,
Sportsmen then begin to shoot.

Fresh October brings the pheasants,
Then to gather nuts is pleasant.

Dull November brings the blast,
Then the leaves are whirling fast.

(When the whole poem is wiped off, the students are able to recite the poem by heart looking at the pictures (a hunter is shooting, the pheasant and the nuts, the whirling leaves).

T: Thank you. Well done!

2. Grammar drills. We all know that it often rains in autumn.

Which is the correct position of the adverbs of frequency: often, rare, seldom, never, ever, ussually? - (after the auxiliary verb but before the main verb).

The students are given training cards. The task is: insert the adverb of frequency in the correct place.
e.g. Tell me what you do. I like to smile at you. /Never, sometimes, often/.
Tell me what you do. I let the boys bully you. / Always, never

The correct variant is checked with the help of the song
(звучить пісня).

Tell me what you always do? — I always Like to smile at you.
Tell me what you never do? — I never let the boys bully you.
Tell me what you often do? — I often think that I love you.
Tell me what you sometimes do? — sometimes dream I'll marry you.

T: I think this pleasant melody of the song will help you to memorize the correct position of the verbs of frequency, and now we'll continue to speak and practise in speaking on the topic 'Travelling” which is the main theme of our today's lesson.

3. Learner training to check and categorize vocabulary/

T: Answer my questions:

Do you usually go out of the city on your holidays?
Do you like to travel?

What kind of transport do you like to travel by?
Under what weather conditions do you like to travel?
Why do people travel?

Who can help us make a tour?

What things are advisable to have while travelling?

(While answering the students complete the memory map with the words and expressions under the following headings: weather, places, reasons, ways, things, people). It looks like this:

T: Thank you for your active participation in the lesson. I see you know a lot of words and expressions on the topic and it’s wonderful because travelling is immensely popular nawadays and know your wish to travel and to see as much as possible. Do you know the words said by B. Franklin "Travelling is one way of lengthening life"? I think it’s so. I wish you could prove this saying in your life. While speaking on the topic we use a lot of words for "travelling": trip, journey, travel, voyage, hike. What is the difference between the words: travel, journey, trip, voyage, hike?

Look at the explanations, given to you, read the examples and try to understand.

4. Oral instructive communication practice.

Travel, journey, trip, voyage and hike

Travel means "travelling in general.' It is normally uncountable.

My interests are music and travelling.

The plural form travels is sometimes used for a long tour in which several places are visited.

Did you meet anybody interesting on your travels?

"Travels, with a Donkey" (book by R.L.Stevenson)

A journey (mainly British English) is one 'piece' of travelling.

Did you have a good journey?

A trip is a return journey together with the activity which is the reason for the journey.

I'm going on business trip next week. (=l'm going on a journey and I'm going to do business.)

Compare:

"How was your journey?" - "The train broke down."
"How was your trip?" - "Successful."

We do not so often use trip for expeditions which have a very serious purpose, are very hard and/or take a very long time.

In 1863 the president travelled to Dacota to make peace with the Indians.

Amundsen made his journey to the South Pole in 1911.

A long sea journey is called a voyage.

The voyage from England to India used to take six months.

A hike is a long walk in the mountains or countryside.

The kids often go hiking at weekends.

T: And now, students choose the proper word and complete the sentence. Write down the number of the sentence and the correct the letter.

The teacher quickly checks the students' works. The key:1d,2b, 3b, 4a,5d,6a,7b,8c.

give the definition or express it in one word:

T: Well, our next task is called 'Find a partner'. Some of the students will get several words, others - definitions of these words. Partners should find each other. Then you'll report the results to the class. You have one minute. Go round the class and try to find the partner, then they will read the definition of the word to the class. The results of this work are given in the table.

5. Discussion on the topic.

T: Imagine that you are at the travel agency. You are suggested some routs but you don't know which kind of transport is more preferable. You are facing with a dilemma: what to choose? (' for' and ' against' travelling by plane, train, ship).

Pt: While travelling by plane I can name the following advantages, from my point of view: first of all, it's very exciting and thrilling; it's comfort, speed and pleasure combined; it's a great saving of time; there is no dust and dirt as we can see at railway stations; there is no need of
changing a train for another train or some other kind of transport; we are offered a tasty and delicious meal on the board of the plane; a very good service; and I have to mark only one 'against' - it's too expensive.

P2: As for me, I like to travel by train very much. I would like to say a word or two about trains. With a train you have speed and comfort as well. From the comfortable seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the whole countryside. You can have a meal in the dining-car if you are hungry. If the journey is a long one you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. The disadvantage in travelling by train I see in that you have to carry all the luggage with you and you should watch it not to be robbed.

P:For me there is no travel so fine as by ship. I like to stand on the deck of a ship and feel the fresh sea wind blowing in my face, to see the rise and fall of the waves and hear the cry of sea-gulls. I like to watch all the ships, sailing ships, rowing boats passing by and, of course, I admire the beautiful nature around. This kind of travel is good for me because I'm not sea-sick but it gets a bit dangerous when the sea is stormy.

T: Thanks a lot. Your answers sounded convincing. It's really difficult to choose which kind of transport to takwhile travelling. And what about travelling on foot?

Let's make a joint project as for finding 'for' and 'against' hiking. Each of you should add one reason in supporting those who are 'for' or 'against'. So, begin please.

'for'

1. Camping is the cheapest way of spending your holiday.

2. Sleeping in tents is good for your health.

3. While hiking you are free to move and stop wherever
you like.

4. Camping and hiking bring you closer to nature.

5. A man gets to know his companions in a long journey.

6. We don't need to go through the customs and our bags
are always with us.

7. We don't need to buy tickets and save our railway fare.

8. You can feel like a real 'wild' man.

9. You can relax from your daily routine.

10. Food cooked on the open fire out-of-doors tastes better.

'against'

1. Your trip depends on the weather.

2. All your things can be heavy.

3. It can be dangerous to travel on foot.

4. You may get very tired and exhausted.

5. While travelling you may be injured.

6. You may get lost.

6. Homework. Would you agree that people of the 21st century are becoming 'a legless generation'? People practically have stopped walking, going on foot, haven't they? Give your reasons in favour or against travelling on foot (composition).

Summary of the lesson; marks and comments on them.

T: You've worked hard at the lesson. Well done, children! Thank you for your work. I hope, you've found our lesson interesting and instructive. So, you get the following marks: N., you get 11; P.. you get 10 points; K., you get 9. You have to brush up your vocabulary. Good-bye,
see you tomorrow. Have a nice day!
