pocket veto «карманное вето»: а special veto power exercised at the end of a legislative session whereby bills not signed by a chief executive die after a spe­cified time. Under the Consti­tution, the President holds a bill for ten days without signing or vetoing it, the bill becomes law if Congress is in session, and is pocket vetoed if Congress adjourns during the ten days. In about one third of the states, the governors exercise similar pocket veto power if they do not approve the measure during a stated period after legislative adjournment. This period varies in these states from three to thirty days.

impeachment - the procedure by which a public official in the US, including the President, is charged with acting illegally and may be forced to leave his or her job. President Richard Nixon resigned after the House Judiciary Committee recommended that he should be impeached (= charged) for the crime of Watergate. Only two presidents have been officially impeached. The first was Andrew Johnson in 1868, who remained President after the US Senate decided by one vote that he should do so. The second was Bill Clinton in 1999, who was also judged not guilty of acting illegally.
