A. Work in pairs. Two of you are directors of the local branch of “Zanussi” company: Managing Director and Director of Human Resources, the other students are persons applying for a job. Read the role-cards carefully and prepare for the interview. Invent any information you need. Then try to reach a satisfactory resolution of your differences of opinion. Compromise in case your options differ.

You are planning to open a new department at your plant. You should hire new persons to head this department. Choose five or seven people and prepare for your meeting carefully. Create different situations and listen to their views.	Everybody gives his/her own opinion in the situations offered by Managing director and Direc­tor of Human Resources.

B. Three situations are given below. Working in groups suggest 5 approaches to resolve each of these conflict situations; one of your approaches should be withdrawal, another – suppression, the third – win/lose, the fourth – compromise and finally and most important – a win/win solution.

(1). Two students share an apartment and all the expenses. It is the end of the academic year and they are, in fact, broke. Without informing his roommate, each has invited a friend for a meal, aware of the fact that there are two potatoes left in the cupboard. Both want the potatoes to form the basis of the meal.

(2). John (a surveyor) and Beth (a lawyer) have a small child, Emily. Before starting a family, they both agreed that they would continue working and share household and child-caring responsibi­lities. Normally, either John or Beth takes Emily to a day care in the morning before driving to work and they take turns picking her up later in the day. Last night (Sunday) they had to call the doctor because Emily had developed a rash. Chickenpox was diagnosed. John says he has three properties to survey on Monday and can’t spare the time to stay at home with the child. Beth is due in court.

(3). A local charitable group applied for a grant from the local authority and were thrilled when a substantial amount was awarded. The secretary wants the money to be spent on administrative equipment – a word processor and a photocopier. The treasurer feels that the money would be better spent on a publicity launch and fund-raising events.
