The book has been devoted to the basic translation issues selected in keeping with the established standards and requirements set for training philology students in translation field.

The aim of the given manual is not only to discuss the fundamentals of linguistic translation theory, but also to enhance students’ cross-cultural awareness through translating culture-specific elements in the source language text and teach them basic translation techniques for overcoming this challenge and preserving the meaning of the SLT.

The materials included in the practical section, hopefully, will enable those who might wish to work as interpreters and translators to make an informed choice of language means in TL. The assingments are selected with the aim of guiding students how to, successfully, develop their translation skills forming part of translation competence.

Discussion-provoking passages from Russian and English focus not only on various translation problem areas on pretextual and textual levels, but also on cultural differences that influence the choice of proper translation strategies.

The scheme of translation analysis of a TL text may be helpful as an efficient tool in the quest of effective translation.

The discussion of various lexicographic data drawn from bilingual and monolingual dictionaries is linked up with tracking down lexical items that are missing from the existing dictionaries.
