*Note: Not all public limited companies are quoted on the Stock Exchange. The Stock Exchange has strict rules about how long a company must have been trading profitably before the company's shares can be sold there. When a company's shares are sold at the Stock Exchange for the first time, this is known as 'going public'. Not all companies choose to go public and in Britain a company can still be a public limited company without going public.
