Aspirin

The Antiplatelet Trialists Collaboration (объединение испытателей противосвертывающих препаратов) has demonstrated the effectiveness of aspirin in cutting heart disease death rates by up to 25 per cent. In emergencies (i.e. acute myocardial infarction) a dose of at least 160 mg of aspirin, given within the first four hours of the onset (возникновение) of chest pain, was needed to ensure rapid initiation of action. The great advantage of aspirin over the other antiplatelet drugs, such as streptokinase, is that the risk of adverse side-effects, such as gastro-intestinal or intracerebral haemorrhage, is much reduced.

The use of aspirin, and of some other antiplatelet drugs, has been well documented to reduce the risk of fatal and non-fatal coronary events, of stroke and of cardiovascular death in patients with established coronary or cerebrovascular (сосуды головного мозга) disease. In the light of the results of the study, it is reasonable to recommend the use of low dose aspirin in hypertensive patients whose blood pressure has been rigorously (строго) controlled, who are at high risk of coronary heart disease, and who are not at risk of bleeding from the gastro-intestinal tract or from other sites.
