Infinitive



A noun/pronoun expresses the person who performs the action expressed by Infinitive.

Examples. I know him to be a very good pupil.

I don’t want you to come home late.

The construction is used:

· after the verbs of physical perception see, watch, hear, feel, notice, etc.

· after the verbs expressing mental activity think, know, expect, understand, believe, etc.

· after the verbs expressing feelings like, love, hate, etc.

· after the verbs expressing wish want, wish, etc.

· after the verbs expressing order tell, ask, get (заставлять), make, let, have (заставлять).

Infinitive goes without particle to after the verbs of physical perception, the verbs make, let, have (заставлять) in the Active Voice and the expressions You’d better, I’d rather and Why not …?

Examples. We watched the sun rise.

I’d rather stay at home and watch TV..

Why not go and see her tonight?

The sentences with Complex Object are translated into Russian by a similar construction or by a subordinate clause with the conjunction что.

Examples. That made the girl smile. Это заставило девушку улыбнуться.

We expect them to arrive tomorrow.Мы ожидаем, что они

приедут завтра.
