First-Year Students Speak About Themselves

I am a student. My name is Alexander Petrov. I am 17. I’ve left school this year (I left school two years ago). Now I am a first-year student at St.Petersburg State Marine Technical University. I am a student of the Faculty of Marine Engineering and Automation.

We study a lot of subjects: higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, descriptive geometry, the history of Russia and some others. We learn English as well. We have English lessons twice a week. My favourite subject is higher mathematics. It is difficult but very interesting. We have lectures, classes and seminars.

We have three or four double periods a day but still there is time left for other activities apart from study. These are numerous and it’s time to mention some of them. There are various societies — scientific, sporting and drama not to mention many others.

Sporting activities are as varied and numerous as the societies. The most popular sports are rowing, skiing, wrestling and aerobics.

So many things are happening at the University each week that it is impossible to see and do all one would wish. But instead we can read about them, for there is a special weekly newspaper published which reports everything of interest, and the most important events are discussed by the students.

The dean of our faculty is professor N. Our sub-dean is professor K. The dean’s office is on the first floor.

In January we’ll take examinations for the first time. We will take exams in science of materials, descriptive geometry, the history of Russia and higher mathematics. Before exams I’ll have final tests in many subjects. I believe I’ll pass my exams. I attend all the lectures, classes and seminars. I never miss them. After the examination period we will have winter vacation.

In summer many students will go to construction sites. I like to study at the University. I get a grant. If I pass my exams with full marks I’ll get an increased grant.
