There are four main types of blood vessels: arteries, arterioles, capillaries and veins. The arteries are of various sizes and their walls, except those are the smallest (l mm or less in diameter) are thick and strong and are themselves furnished with minute blood vessel. Each of the smallest arterial twigs divides into a number of still finer vessels called arterioles. An arteriole breaks up into a number of extremely narrow tubes, the capillaries. The veins like the arterioles have walls composed of three coats. The wall of a vein is much thinner than that of the companion artery.
