Use of the essential vocabulary



Task 2. Memorise the essential vocabulary to Text 1 and translate the sentences containing it:

(1) asset (майно, власність; цінна якість) – anything one owns or any quality one has that is of value or use; (pl) the total property of a person, firm or institution, esp. that part which can be used to pay debts. He’ll be a great asset to the company. assetstripping – розпродаж майна фірми capital assets – капітал fixed assets – нерухоме майно intangible assets – нематеріальна власність liquid assets – ліквідна власність  
(2) coincidental (випадковий) – happening completely by chance without being planned. The direct approach is to offer the person a new job directly and straight either by phone, e-mail, coincidental meeting, at an exhibition or on the golf course. to coincide – збігатись; відповідати, рівнятись coincident – відповідний coincidence – випадковий збіг обставин coincidentally – випадково  
(3) competitor (суперник, конкурент) – a person, team, company etc. that is competing with another. Most likely their job involves employment at direct or indirect competitors of the company that is trying to fill their positions. to compete – змагатися, конкурувати competition – конкуренція, суперництво competitive – конкуруючий, конкурентоспроможний  
(4) dedicated(присвячений) – working very hard at what he/she does because of caring a lot about it; made for or used for only one particular purpose. Either way the process of finding an employee may involve advertising, commonly in the recruitment section of newspapers or in a newspaper dedicated to job advertisements. to dedicate – присвячувати  
(5) discreet (обережний, стриманий) – careful about what you say or do, so that you do not offend, upset or embarrass people or tell secrets. On the one hand headhunting is more aggressive than the usual recruitment process, on the other hand much more discreet. discreetly – розсудливо, обережно  
(6) to fit in/into(пристосовуватись, підходити) – to be accepted by other people in the group; to be part of the group or system. The main idea of headhunting is that there is already someone who perfectly fits into the position that is vacant.  
(7) to grant (дарувати, наділяти) – to give smb. smth. or allow them to have smth. that they have asked for. They will make it at least as hard as possible for them to hire their asset by granting special advantages to this person in their contracts.  
(8) head-hunter (мисливець за спреціалістами) – smb. who finds people with the right skills and experience to do particular jobs and who tries to persuade them to leave their present jobs. He said yesterday that he was approached by head-hunters for the £150,000 a year stock exchange job in August. to head-hunt – полювати за спеціалістами head-hunting – полювання за спеціалістами  
(9) hunt (полювання; пошуки) – a search for smb. or smth. that is difficult to find. That’s why headhunting is rarely used and just in cases where the profit of a successful hunt is higher than the damage caused to the reputation and position of the person headhunted as well as the company headhunting their new asset.  
(10) issue (предмет обговорення, проблема) – a subject or problem that is often discussed or argued about, especially a social or political matter that affects the interests of a lot of people. The key issue is whether workers should be classified as “employees”. to issue – випускати, пускати в обіг  
(11) legal (законний, правовий) – concerned with or relating to the law. As he left court he said only that he would be seeking legal advice on a compensation claim. legally – законно, на підставі закону legalist – законник legality – відданість букві закону; легальність to legalise – узаконювати, легалізувати legalisation – легалізація  
(12) obsolete (застарілий) – no longer in use, practice or favour, out-of-date. This makes standard recruitment obsolete. obsolescence – моральне спрацювання; технічне старіння obsolescent – що відживає, що старіє  
(13) to poach (незаконно полювати, втручатися в чужі справи, переймати чужі ідеї) – to persuade smb. who works for smb. else to come and work for you. They were furious when one of their best managers was poached by another company. poacher – браконьєр  
(14) to prevent(перешкоджати, запобігати) – to stop smth. from happening or stop smb. from doing smth. Apart from several legal issues that may prevent employees to change their jobs, there are a lot of other difficulties. preventive – запобіжний prevention – відвернення, застереження  
(15) to recruit (вербувати, наймати на роботу) – to find new people to work in a company, join an organisation, do a job etc. It's getting more and more difficult to recruit experienced staff. a recruit – новобранець, новачок recruiter – вербувальник recruitment – вербування, набір  
(16) to shrink(зменшувати, стискати) – to become or to make smth. smaller in amount, size or value. Profits have been shrinking over the last year.  
(17) to target (робити когось мішенню) – to make smth. have an effect on a particular limited group or area. Posts can also be advertised at a job centre if they are targeting the unemployed. a target – мішень, ціль

Task 7. Rearrange the following jumbled words into sentences:

1. The process, for a job or function, of finding possible candidates, is usually called recruitment. 2. Posts can also be advertised, if they are targeting, at a job centre, the unemployed. 3. Employment agencies, in their windows, will often advertise jobs. 4. Headhunting, towards the problem, has a quite different approach, of vacant jobs. 5. Headhun­ting, in the business world, is reserved to certain jobs, and certain levels. 6. The main idea of headhunting is, into the position, who perfectly fits, that there already is someone, that is vacant. 7. This makes standard recruitment obsolete, who are suitable, as the person or persons, are already known to the company, its human resources department or an external recruiter. 8. Job positions, and several strategic positions in companies, where headhunting is used, like management positions, involve certain high skilled developers, especially in the field of sales and marketing. 9. The reason for headhunting is, for certain projects, if they hire the right person, that companies can save much time and money, for the job. 10. A person, can mean the difference or has the needed contacts, who already has the needed knowledge, between a successful and an unsuccessful project.

Task 8. Memorise the essential vocabulary to Text 2 and translate the sentences containing it:

(1) to advertise (рекламувати, повідомляти) – to make smth. known generally or in public, especially in order to sell it. There is no harm in applying for other jobs, but if I were you I wouldn’t advertise the fact at work. advertisement – оголошення advertising – реклама ad – розм. оголошення, реклама  
(2) applicant (кандидат, претендент) – a person who formally requests smth., especially a job or a place at college or university. Flexibility is one of the main criteria for job applicants. to apply – подавати заяву; звертатись з проханням application – заява; звернення  
(3) to assist (допомагати) – to help. Even if your friends have no influential connections or can’t assist you in employment at the present moment, let them know that you are seeking a new job. assistance – допомога, сприяння assistant – помічник
(4) brief (стислий, короткий) – lasting only a short time or containing few words. His speech was mercifully brief. briefly – стисло in brief – кількома словами  
(5) classified or classified ad (оголошення про роботу) – a small advertisement that you put in a newspaper or a magazine, usually because you want to sell or buy smth. or to find or offer a job. One of the common methods of searching a job is looking through the classifieds. to classify – розподіляти за категоріями  
(6) cold-calling (діяльність комівояжера) – business activity which is based on telephoning or visiting possible customers without prior appointment. Another recommended method of job hunting is to use the so called cold-calling to companies that one desires to work for and inquire to whether there is any job vacancy.  
(7) concise (чіткий, стислий) – brief, condensed, expressing much in few words. There is no one correct way to write a résumé but it is generally recommended that it be brief, organised and concise. concisely – чітко, виразно conciseness (concision) – стислість, чіткість  
(8) to conquer (завойовувати, підкоряти) – to deal with or successfully fight against a problem or an unreasonable fear; to take control or possession of foreign land or a group of people, by force. And during this week you are to conquer the net, newspapers and recruiting agencies. conqueror – завойовник conquest – завоювання, підкорення  
(9) essential (важливий, істотний) – extremely important and necessary. Even in small companies, computers are an essential tool. essentially – по суті, істотно essentiality – істотність, сутність  
(10) field (сфера) – an area of activity or interest. She wants to work in the field of medicine.  
(11) means(засоби) – a method or way of doing smth. Different employers have different ways and means of the application form.  
(12) noviciate, novitiate (випробувальний період; учнівство) – the period of being a novice. Requirements to every employee are usually tested during the process of the job interviews and the noviciate. novice – початківець, учень  
(13) portfolio (портфоліо) – a collection of drawings, documents etc. that represent a person’s, especially an artist’s, work. With certain occupations, such as for example graphic design portfolios of a job seeker's previous work are essential and are evaluated as much, if not more than the person's résumé.  
(14) prospective (майбутній, очікуваний) – (of payments etc.) relating to the future; destined or expected to be. This may mean e-mailing or mailing in a hard copy of your résumé to a prospective employer.  
(15) respective (відповідний) – relating or belonging to each of the individual people or things you have just mentioned. Everyone would go into the hall for assembly and then afterwards we’d go to our respective classes. respectively – відповідно  
(16) résuméorCV(резюме, життєпис) – a short written description of one’s education, qualifications, previous employment and sometimes also one’s personal interests, which one sends to an employer when trying to get a job. One can also go and hand out résumés or Curriculum Vitae to prospective employers.  
(17) search engine (пошуковий механізм; пошукова служба) – a computer program which finds information on the Internet by looking for words which you have typed in. Using a search engine is one of the methods of job hunting.  
(18) to seek(шукати, намагатися знайти) – to try, to attempt to find or get smth., especially smth. which is not a physical object. He is actively seeking a job.  
(19) to turn up (траплятися, виявлятися) – to appear, to be found unexpectedly. A worthy position may turn up in a week’s time.  
(20) worthy (гідний, достойний) – deserving respect, admiration, support. Two points in this report are especially worthy of notice.
