11. Read and translate the texts. Ask questions on the text and retell it:

CINEMA IN ENGLAND

In England the cinema is usually called "the pictures". The American name "the movies", is sometimes used too. The first performance or "showing", as it is called, begins at about two o'clock in the afternoon and the performances go on from then until about half past ten. The cinema is not emptied between the "showings", so once you have paid for your seat you can stay in the cinema as long as you like. There is usually one main film, a shorter one, a newsfilm, some advertisements and a "trailer" telling about the films for the next week. Cinemas used to be more crowded than they are now. Many people used to go to the cinema two or three times a week, but today people like to stay at home to watch television, particularly when it is cold and wet outside. The prices of cinema seats outside London are higher. London cinemas start films as early as 12.00 o'clock in the afternoon and there are often late- night programmes starting between 11 o'clock at night and midnight. Exact times and programmes are advertised in daily newspapers.

THE CINEMA

There are many different kinds of films: feature films, horror films, thrillers, films of plays, newsreels, cartoons, foreign films dubbed in the mother tongue, and documentaries. Films may be silent or may have sound-tracks; may be on ordinary or wide screens; and may be in black-and-white or in colour.

At the outset these were only silent films in black-and-white on screens of ordinary size. Nowadays these films are part of history, and we usually prefer films with sound to silent ones, the wide screen to the ordinary screen, and colour to black-and- white. Why is this? — for we sometimes watch the old silent films with great pleasure. For example, those featuring the great Charles Chaplin.

Usually we watch films either in the cinema or on TV and we probably see more and more varied films on TV. Nevertheless from time to time I go to the cinema. I prefer the one situated in our district. It is called "Bratislava". Hie last film I saw in this cinema was an American film "Gone With the Wind", dubbed in Ukrainian. It was a beautiful film.

In my boyhood I liked "A Cat in Top Boots", "Captain Grant's Children" and 'The Fate of a Man". Later I saw "War and Peace", "Hamlet", "Othello", "Oliver Twist". Now I like to watch all sorts of films, chiefly on the TV as I have already said. I was especially fond of Walt Disney's cartoons, "Duck Tales". These days we can watch many video films. They are, as a rule, the newest ones produced in the West. Among them are horror films and thriller cowboy films.

Types of films and names of some of them:

a feature film — художній

фільм a horror film — фільм жахів

a thriller (film) — трілер

a newsreel — кінохроніка

a cartoon — мультиплікаційний фільм (мультфільм)

a dubbed film — дубльований фільм

a documentary — документальний фільм

a silent/sound film — німий/звуковий фільм

an ordinary/wide-screen film — звичайний/широкоекранний фільм

black-and-white/colour film — чорно-білий/кольоровий - фільм

"A Cat in Top Boots" — "Кіт у чоботях"

"Captain Grant's children" — "Діти капітана Гранта"

"The Fate of a Man" — "Доля людини"

"War and Peace" — "Війна і мир" "Duck Tales" — "Качині історії"
