Прошедшее длительное время — Past Progressive (Continuous) Tense — обозначает действие, протекавшее в определенный момент в прошлом, и образуется путем сочетания глагола to be в прошедшем времени и соответствующем лице с причастием настоящего времени (ing -овая форма глагола):

I was watching television when the telephone rang. — Я смотрел телевизор, когда зазвонил телефон, (букв.: я был смотрящий...)

We were repairing the client's car yesterday at 6 p.m. – Вчера в шесть вечера мы ремонтировали машину клиента, (букв, мы были ремонтирующие...)

Не was trying to open the bag while she was checking the passport. — Он пытался открыть сумку, в то время как она проверяла паспорт, (букв.: он был пытающийся...)

Указание на момент, в который протекало действие в прошлом, может быть дано точным указанием времени (at 6 p.m.), другим действием — «точечным» (when the telephone rang) или параллельным, также протяженным (while she was checking the passport).

Вопросительные предложения с глаголом в форме прошедшего длительного времени строятся так же, как и в случае с настоящим длительным:

Специальный вопрос:

Who was watching television when the telephone rang?

What was I doing when the telephone rang?

Разделительный вопрос:

Ответы (положительный и отрицательный) на вопросительные предложения в прошедшем длительном подчиняются тем же грамматическим правилам, что и в случае с настоящим длительным временем.
