People, elephants and other animals on the London Underground

Anyone who has to travel a long way to get to work (or school, college, university etc) knows that it is not very much fun. And if the modern Moscow Metro with its beautiful stations and more or less comfortable trains seems like hell during rush hour, try to imagine what it's like travelling on the London Underground. The London Underground (or the Tube as it's often called) is the oldest metro system in the world. The London Tube carriages are much smaller and stuffier than the Moscow ones. London is not only one of the largest cities in the world, but also one of the widest. So getting around London often takes a long time. Every morning hundreds of thousands of tired commuters from all parts of England get up at the crack of dawn to start their long journey to London. In fact, even if you live in London, it can still take you two hours to get to work.

So how do London commuters entertain themselves while travelling on the tube? Most people read a book or a newspaper or listen to some music. British people don't normally chat to other passengers on the train because they don't want to disturb other people.

About 15 years ago Paul Middlewick invented a totally new way of entertaining himself on the way to work. One morning he couldn't find anything more interesting to do than to stare at the Tube map. Suddenly, he saw his first Underground Animal — the Elephant. Since then, Paul has discovered many other animals made of Tube lines and stations. Paul got so interested in this work, that he has now got a website called Animals on the Underground.com, so that other people can see the Animals.
