VIII. Famous British tradition: afternoon tea. You’ve probably heard of the British tradition of taking tea at 4 pm. Does it really exist? How did it start? And where can the Brits can enjoy very own afternoon tea?

IX. Some food with your tea? Read the following information and try your best to identify special items of food (the most typical things) accompanying Afternoon tea in Britain (use the dictionary if necessary):

1. Eccles Cakes a) delicious cakes with icing on the top and currants inside
2.Crumpets b) a small typical type of cake, often serves with butter and jam; it comes from the place where the kings of Scotland were crowned, the Stone (Scone of Destiny) or it comes from Gaelic “sgonn”, which means “a large mouthful”
3.High tea c) a cup of tea which is Cockney rhyming slang for tea
4. A Chelsea Bun d) a cake filled with the variety of fillings, including fruit, cream cheese, almond paste and nuts.
5.Scones e) a cup of tea that is taken about 4 pm in the afternoon often accompanied by cakes and sandwiches
6. Danish Pastry f) dry rubbery little cakes with holes in them best eaten toasted with lots of butter that melts down into the wholes and that can be eaten with jam or piece of cheese
7. Afternoon tea g) are light cakes filled with currants where the word Eccles means church and is derived from the Greek word “Ecclesia”
8.A cuppa h) a hot meal that is sold at 6 pm, not used so much today and has nothing to do with the afternoon tea
9. A cream tea i) a small cake with soft dough in the middle typically made with chocolate or blueberry
10. A muffin j) a version of the afternoon tea that consists of a pot of a tea with scone, some strawberry jam and clotted cream also known as Devonshire Cream, produced by heating the milk until a layer of cream forms on the surface, which later cool down and tastes delicious on the scones
