44. Read the words.

tone, not, fort, pot, more, code, force, doll, mode, bolt, phone, port, sock, hope, moldy, donkey, explore, rock, horse.

45. Answer the questions:

1. What are the main rules of introduction? 2. What is more correct – to introduce man to a woman or a woman to a man? 3. What do you usually say when you want to introduce someone? 4. What is expected as an answer to “How do you do?” 5. What norms of behavior do you know? 6. Do the norms of behavior in Ukraine and in Great Britain coincide? 7. What are they different in?

46. Read the texts about norms of behavior in Great Britain and in USA. Compare them with the norms of behavior in our country.

One of the most striking features of English life is the self-discipline and courtesy of people of all classes. There is little noisy behavior, and practically no loud disputing in the street. People do not rush excitedly for seats in buses or trains, but take their seats in queues at bus stops in a quit and orderly manner.

Englishmen are naturally polite and are never tired in saying “Thank you”, “I’m sorry”, “Beg you pardon”. If you follow anyone who is entering a building or a room, he will hold the door open for you.

English people don’t like displaying their emotions even in dangerous situations and they seem to remain cheerful under difficulties. They do not like any boasting or showing off in manners, dress or speech. They prefer quite Sunday evening to a noisy party.

American society seems to be much more informal than the British and, in some ways, is characterized by less social distinction. Students do not rise when a teacher enters the room. Sometimes they do not always use the respectful “Sir”. They use first name when calling each other, slap on the back, jock and are much freer in their speech. You will often hear the word “Hi” used instead of the usual “Hello”, and “Howdy” instead of “How do you do?”

Certain forms of politeness are observed on social occasions. Women may wear the hats in church, in restaurants. Men who do wear the hats ordinarily remove them in elevators, churches, private homes, business offices – in fact in most public situations when they wish to show respect.
