I. Put the verbs in brackets in the correct present tense

NB! When the verbs be, feel, look, smell, taste, sound are used as link verbs they take adjectives as predicatives, thus forming a compound nominal predicate. Note that the adjective “well” (meaning in good health) is found after the verbs be, feel and look.

II. Answer the following questions using the compound nominal predicate. The following list of adjectives may be of help: happy,excited,gloomy, loud, depressed, tasty, relaxed, bad, active, pale, uncomfortable, sunburnt, low, appetizing, irritating, energetic, calm, unwell, stressed, cheerful, delicious, enthusiastic.

1. How does a shy person feel if they find themselves in a company of people they do not know?

2. How do most people feel if the weather is nasty, everything goes wrong?

3. How does a person usually look after a long illness?

4. How does a person look after a long holiday by the sea?

5. How does a mother’s voice sound when she speaks to her baby?

6. How does the radio sound if it is turned to a maximum power?

7. How does the food smell to you when you are hungry?

8. How does a person feel when they learn good news?

9. How does a student feel if they fail their exams?

10. How does a student look when they pass their exams?

III. Translate the sentences from Russian into English:

1) Моя мама очень молодо выглядит и чувствует себя молодой.

2) Том вошел в кухню и сказал: «Мм… Пахнет вкусно!» «Я уже попробовала суп, он и правда хорош на вкус» - сказала Анджела.

3) Майк чувствовал себя так неловко, что мне стало жаль его. Он всегда стесняется в присутствии незнакомых людей.

4) Анна выглядит очень нездоровой и бледной, ей следует сходить к врачу.

5) После смерти мужа Мэри находилась в состоянии стресса и чувствовала себя подавленной.

6) Твое замечание прозвучало довольно грубо. Пожалуйста, постарайся быть вежливым!

7) Как ты ощущаешь себя в роли студента? – Я чувствую себя великолепно!
