Описание графиков и таблиц

Чтобы сделать информацию, представленную в докладе, более понятной и наглядной, используются графики и таблицы (GRAPHS and TABLES). Для эффективной работы с графиками и таблицами существует определенная последовательность:

1. Определитесь с основным предназначением вашего графика (таблицы). Это будет выражено в вашем первом предложении. Используйте следующие выражения:

The graph/table shows/indicates/illustrates/reveals/represents

It is clear from the table/graph

It can be seen from the table/graph

As the table/graph shows

As can be seen from the table/graph

As is shown by the graph/table

As is illustrated by the table/graph

From the graph/table is clear

Избегайте личных местоимений. Применяйте безличные или пассивные конструкции! E.g. This graph shows the population of Asia in the 20th century.

2. Определитесь с единицами измерения и временными рамками. Важны детали описания вашей таблицы/графика. Для этой цели необходимы точные слова и выражения для определения времени и мер.

2.1 Выражение времени.

in: In 1999/ In the 20th century/In the first ten years there was a significant increase of production.

for: For the first six months/For twenty years/the number of employees remains the same.

during: During the first six months/During the first half of the century/During the remainder of the year production was slowing down, while imports increased.

from-to/until: From August to/ until November/From1995 to 2010 there was no change in energy use.

between-and: Between 1950 and 1960 there was no change in the rate of fuel consumption.

before/after: Before 1999 the number remained small, but after 2006 there was a sudden increase.

around/about: Around/about 2006 there was a change in the number of female part-time employees.

by: By the late 19th century the rural workforce had declined significantly.

at: At the end of the last century there was a sharp increase in manufacturing.

since: Since the 19th century there has been a steady decline.

(in) the period from ___to__/ (in) the period between ____ and___/ in the first/last three months of the year/ over a ten year period / after that /then / in the 1980s

2.2 Употребление времен:

Говоря о тенденциях или движениях, которые случились в прошлом и более не имеют места, употребляйте Past Simple. Для двух одновременно происходящих действий – Past Progressive. Если вы употребляете since или recently, это означает, что действие соотнесено с настоящим. Это означает, что в данном случае необходимо употребить Present Perfect. Использование by предполагает Past Perfect.

2.3 Измерение количества:

Amount и quantity лучше употреблять с неисчисляемыми существительными, хотя оба слова употребляются и с исчисляемыми. Но для исчисляемых лучше употреблять number.
