Stylistic variation is an important feature of a natural human language. Depending on the purpose of this or that act of communication, the user will select one of the available styles. In this sense, socializing with family and friends will be less formal than socializing with business contacts. The choice of a particular style will thus depend on the addressee.

Knowledge of words, terms, collocations and stylistic oppositions, however, is not enough for communicating in English. Communication rests on the use of numerous recurrent patterns of discourse (модели речепроизводства). For a certain stylistic option a suitable pattern of discourse should be selected and reproduced. Vocabulary acquisition as a step-by-step process should therefore be coordinated with the underlying patterns of spoken and written Business English discourse. The integration of the lexical and syntactic aspects of communication is an indispensable foundation of well-organized foreign language acquisition.

The three constituents- General English words, stylistic oppositions and key business terms-are essential for communication. Learners should focus on style and build up active business vocabulary through stylistic variation and should be purposefully guided towards pairs like:

fail go under

resign stand down

establish set up

supervise look after

start doing smth. go about smth.

set out to do smth.

reflect think over

draw attention to point out

visit call on

dissapoint let down

perceive see

stipulate demand

terminate end
