Exercise 19. Put one verb in each sentence into Past Simple, and the other verb into Past Perfect. Decide which action is prior to the other.

1. When the police (arrive), the car (go).

2. When I (get) to the shop, it (close).

3. When we (leave) the beach, the rain (start) already.

4. I (try) telephoning her several times but she (leave) the country.

5. When I (find) my purse, someone (take) the money out of it.

6. The car (go) when I (look) into the street.

7. All the garages (close) by the time we (cross) the border.

8. The post (not arrive) when I (leave) the house this morning.

9. By the time I (get) into town, the shops (close).
