Adjectives and Adverbs



Ex. 1. Form adjectives from the following nouns and verbs with the help of suffixes -ous, -ic, -ical, -al, -able, -ive, -y, -ly:

advantage, history, continent, adventure, apology, ambition, art, drama, ecology, emotion, energy, function, grammar, intention, logic, mountain, nation, optimism, pessimism, philosophy, profession, region, science, sensation, society, simbol, sympathy, synonym, system, theatre, theory, tradition, tragedy, accept, appreciate, believe, contradict, communicate, complete, decorate, describe, enjoy, forget, inform, possess, prefer, produce, regret, rely, repeat, satisfy, day, fortnight, gloom, guilt, haste, knowledge, luck, memory, month, mood, neighbour, quarter, reason, sand, taste, year.

Ex. 2. Use one of the negative prefixes (un-, dis-, in-, im-, il-) to form the opposite of each of the following adjectives:

helpful, agreeable, accessible, moral, legal, satisfactory, stable, organised, satisfied, adequate, perfect, appropriate, compatible, complete, conscious, convenient, desirable, flexible, experienced, frequent, grateful, hospitable, logical, natural, personal, polite, probable, respectful, sociable, visible.

Ex. 3. Decide which of the adjectives on the left have a similar meaning to the ones on the right:

clever, cunning, excitable, fair, forgetful, frank, glum, good-natured, jolly, level-headed, reliable, self-confident, snobbish, surly, two-faced absent-minded, bright, cheerful, crafty, direct, even-handed, grumpy, highly-strung, insincere, kind, miserable, self-assured, sensible, stuck-up, trustworthy

Ex. 4. Find the best possible place for the adverbs:

1. I can’t do it (possibly).

2. He has mentioned it (never).

3. We just watched TV (tonight).

4. What have you been doing (here).

5. He could have managed it (easily).

6. She listened to him (respectively).

7. She was trying to explain (simply).

8. They’ve forgotten the time (probably).

9. Turning the books over he looked at the titles (rapidly).

10. The idea passed through my mind (idly).

11. She spoke Italian (perfectly).

12. I must just wait for his letter (patiently).

13. Do you read upside down? (usually)

14. It is very difficult (sometimes).

15. Do you go to the library? (often)

16. Have you been to London (ever).

17. I go to the theatre (seldom).

18. She hasn’t written that letter (yet).

19. He is here (still).

20. I have finished (already).

Ex. 5. Choose the right adverb:

1. You can get the book (free/freely).

2. He couldn’t explain it (clear/clearly).

3. I (hard/hardly) studied at all last term.

4. You guessed (wrong/wrongly).

5. She was (high/highly) praised for her work.

6. He has been working (hard/hardly).

7. I’m getting (pretty/prettily) tired.

8. You can speak (free/freely) in front of him.

9. My friends are (most/mostly) students.

10. I haven’t been to the theatre much (late/lately).

11. He came back (late, lately).

12. You’re doing (fine/finely).

13. Take it (easy/easily).

14. I understood his English (easy/easily).

15. He always travelled (light/lightly).

Ex. 6. Complete the sentences with the following words: amazing(ly), real(ly), wonderful(ly), surprising(ly), unbelievable(ly), unhappy(ily), slow(ly), clear(ly), beautiful(ly), cold(ly):

1. Angela is ___ good with her friends.

2. Do you think that’s a ___ diamond in her ring?

3. John was ___ kind to me when I came to this country.

4. The job was ___ easy.

5. He acted ___ stupidly last year.

6. «I suppose we’ll never see each other again», she said ___.

7. He spoke very ___, and she heard every word.

8. This handwriting isn’t very ___. Can you read it any better than me.

9. She is really ___.

10. He answered me ___.

Ex. 7. Use comparative/superlative adjectives or adverbs in the following sentences:

1. He’s (intelligent) person than my brother.

2. She was the (practical) of the family.

3. I wanted to ask you both what you thought of my (late) films if you had seen them.

4. He is (talkative) than his sister.

5. He turned out to be (angry) than I had expected.

6. Today I’m no (wise) than yesterday.

7. Jack is the (clever) of the three brothers.

8. Andy’s the most intelligent, but Sue works (hard).

9. French is the language she speaks (easily).

10. Mark speaks English (fluently) of all the boys in his class.

Ex. 8. Answer the questions using irregular comparison: good/well – better – best, bad – worse – worst, little – less – least, much/many – more – most, old –older/elder – oldest/eldest, far – farther/further – farthest/furthest:

1. If I’m not happy with the pen I’ve got and money is not a problem, what should I do?

2. Three thousand people entered a poetry competition. Max’s poem won. Why?

3. Five friends all arrived for lunch at the same time. Alice had left home an hour before anyone else. Why?

4. I had a cold. I went to work, but left early and went home to bed. Why?

5. I wanted to make a pear tart, but I realised all the pears were going bad. I used parts of some of the pears. Which three pears did I throw away?

6. Jill was born in 1970. Her sisters Liz and Sue were born in 1972 and 1973, and her brothers Ted and Joe were born in 1971 and 1974. What can Liz call Jill? What can Joe call Ted? What can Sue call Jill?

7. My cousin has a medical problem. The doctors have done some tests, but they still can’t decide what the problem is. What are they going to do?

8. Seven different plants need different amounts of water. Which one will grow best in a dry sunny place?

9. The Blacks have got a big house and three expensive cars. The Browns have got a small flat and one inexpensive car. Why? (Answer in two ways)

10. Why does it take longer for me to walk to the post office than to the park?

Ex. 9. Revision: translate from Ukrainian into English paying attention to the Degrees of Comparison:

1. Цей роман такий же популярний, як і попередній.

2. Тема вашого дослідження така ж актуальна, як і мого.

3. Ваше повідомлення з історії Англії було таким же цікавим, як і з історії Шотландії.

4. У Великобританії більше дощів, ніж в Україні, але менше, ніж в Індії.

5. Це найвідоміший фільм? — Не думаю, є багато більш відомих фільмів.

6. Хто тут старіший за всіх? — Ця жінка, а її чоловік молодший за неї на десять років.

7. І це ти називаєш найщасливішим часом у твоєму житті?

8. Чим цікавішою є книга, тим важче від неї відірватися.

9. Яка вправа була для тебе найкориснішою?

10. Його останній роман широко висвітлюється в пресі.

11. Мабуть, ця бібліотека розташована дальше від центру.

12. Я знаю, де можна купити цей журнал дешевше.

13. Граматика англійської мови важка, але англійська вимова важча.

14. Крим — одне з найкращих місць для відпочинку.

15. Дніпро коротший за Волгу.
