Most employed people are paid a wage or a salary. Factory workers and other manual workers, clerks, and other office workers below management level, shop assistants, and so on receive wages, as their occupation does not require university degree. Professional people, such as managers, doctors, lawyers, teachers receive salaries.

The wages of many industrial workers are made up of several elements: their basic wage, which is the fixed sum for a certain number of hours, overtime pay for any extra hours and sometimes a bonus, extra money that you are paid in addition to your usual salary, for example, for higher productivity.

Salaries are paid to professional people, monthly, by cheque. The word pay can be used for both groups of people. Benefit(s) and perks mean extra money or other advantages that you get in addition to your salary from your employer.
