Артикли с географическими названиями

1) THE употребляется:

1. с названиями океанов: the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean;
2. с названиями морей: the Black Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea;
3. с названиями рек: the Mississippi, the Volga, the Colorado, the Thames;
4. с названиями озер, если нет слова lake: the Baikal (Lake Baikal), the Michigan (Lake Michigan), the Ontario (Lake Ontario);
5. c названиями групп островов: the Canarian Islands, the British Isles;
6. с названиями горных цепей: the Caucasus, the Altai Mountains, the Alps, the Urals;
7. с названиями проливов, заливов, каналов: the English Channel, the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of California, the Panama Canal;
8. с названиями пустынь: the Sahara Desert, the Great Victoria Desert, the Simpson Desert;
9. с названиями полюсов и частей света: the North Pole, the South Pole, the east, the west, the south, the north

2) АРТИКЛЬ НЕ УПОТРЕБЛЯЕТСЯ:

1. с названиями континентов: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia;
2. с названиями стран: Russia, Great Britain, Norway, Finland, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Spain;

штатов (California, Alaska, Washington), графств (Brixton). Но если в названии страны есть слова federation, state, kingdom, union, следует употребить артикль the: the Russian Federation, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union. А также слова-исключения: the Ukraine, the Congo, the Netherlands, the Vatican, the Argentine, the Hague.

1. c названиями городов: Moscow, London, Washington D.C., Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Ottawa;
2. с названиями площадей: Red Square, Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square, Palace Square, Bloomsbury Square, Theatre Square, Times Square;
3. с названиями улиц: Baker Street, High Street;
4. с названиями мостов: London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Westminster Bridge, Anichkov Bridge;
5. с названиями парков: Hyde Park, St. James’s Park, Green Park, Kensington Gardens;
6. c названием отдельно стоящей горы: Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Everest, Elbrus;
7. с названием одного острова: Cuba, Ireland, Great Britain; полуострова: Sakhalin (но the Crimea);
8. с названиями станций: Waterloo Station;
9. с названиями аэропортов: Heathrow Airport
