I like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more,
I like your body, I like what it does,
I like its hows, I like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones,
and the trembling-firm-smooth ness
and which I will again
and again and again kiss,
I like kissing this and that of you,
I like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh...
And eyes big love crumbs,
and possibly I like the thrill
of under me you so quite new
No doubt, it's the poet's vision of the world that determines the character of his writing. Nevertheless many of the poetic lines about love are sombre and dark. Some poets had an essentially pessimistic view on these matters. Such poetry thrived by the end of the 19th century when Symbolism came to English poetry. This period is associated with the name of Arthur Symons (1865-1945), one of the most well-known among the so-called 'minor poets'. He contributed to English poetry as a translator, too. It was Symons who brought contemporary French poetry to Britain. In 1897 he visited Russia and made friends with Valery Bruysov. He later became a regular contributor to the literary magazine published in Russia. His early verses are more like impressionist sketches of the reality; later hit lines acquired greater technical diversity. Symons was a fine master of alliteration and musicality.
