The Shipbuilding Industry

Shipbuilding is one of the oldest industries. The development of shipbuilding in Russia is closely connected with the development of many branches of industry and entire economy of the country.

The progress in technology and science helped shipbuilding development. The construction of ships is an extremely complex process and many enterprises of the country take part in it.

The products of shipyard range from wooden launches to passenger liners and icebreakers with powerful machinery and complicated equipment. Modern ships are greatly varying in dimensions, material, design and the purpose for which they are designed.

Naturally there must be special kinds of shipyards for building such a great variety of ships. Modern shipyards are subdivided into yards building metal ships, concrete, wooden, composite or plastic ships. Shipyards are also subdivided into yards building seagoing vessels and those building lake and river craft.
