Данная методическая разработка по дисциплине «Домашнее чтение» по произведению Х.Ли «Убить пересмешника» предназначается для студентов 4 курса английского отделения факультета РГФ. Пособие включает краткие сведения об авторе романа, задания по лексике и содержанию каждой главы, вопросы по стилистическим особенностям текста и его организации, что в целом способствует более вдумчивому прочтению оригинального текста на английском языке и его адекватной интерпретации.

Preface

The choice of the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by the well-known American novelist Nelle Harper Lee for reading and interpretation with 4^th-year students has been caused by the problems of intolerance existing in the modern society.

This brochure is aimed at developing skills of comprehensive reading, which presupposes acquiring a good command of the language as well as the ability to perceive stylistic peculiarities of the text and its structure, to apprehend the author's conception. To achieve it, students should carefully fulfill all the tasks given for each chapter.

Assignments for each chapter contain the following tasks.

1. Key vocabulary study, which includes suggesting Russian equivalents for the English words and word combinations that have already been explained in English; memorizing the words and word combinations for intensive study; translating the sentences in which the words and word combinations for intensive study are used; reproducing them in the situations from the book.

2. Plot discussion. Students are supposed to answer the questions in 5-7 complete sentences including a quote from the text that would support his/her response.

3. Translation activities. The extracts given for translation, in our view, are especially important for understanding the main idea of each chapter.

4. Interpretation of the literary composition. Questions on stylistic peculiarities of the text and its structure, characters sketching, themes delineating, etc. are regarded as a final step in the studies, but the teacher may as well ask students to carry out these assignments in the course of their reading the book.

The questions and assignments offered have been tested by the author over a period of one semester with 4^th –year students and proved to be helpful in teaching the students to read the novel thoughtfully and interpret it adequately.

Nelle Harper Lee (born April 28, 1926) is an American novelist known for her Pulitzer Prize–winning 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, her only major work to date. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom of United States for her contributions to literature in 2007.
